This language is the language for your dream programming job, and every site agrees to this language.

Over the past few months, we’ve taken a comprehensive deep dive into the popularity of programming languages.

Also: The most popular programming languages in 2024

But how do you measure popularity? I have been asking GitHub. Are there more than one project in the popular programming forums? Do they post on top of most popular programs, or are they just surveys? What really determines what people like to use for their apps?

Today we will look at the one factor that ultimately matters the most to people: where are the jobs?

My research method was a bit straightforward: I visited the most popular job boards and searched by name for each programming language. This analysis is an overview of demand for languages in early November 2024.

I skipped the search results because many job sites don’t give me a total for searching.’ Three sites were good counts of how many jobs are there according to the terms I searched for, Dice, Indeed and LinkedIn.

The search data is important to understand what our search results are. When I look up for a word like SQL, the job site’s search engine returns every single offer of jobs that contains the word SQL in its listing. Those answers may include python programming job where they list SQL and also some reports might be based on basic web admin job with SQL as well as being listed in the Job Listing.

So, in this article I’m not saying that the sites have a specific number of job openings for SQL programmers. Instead, I am posting SQL as an indication on re-search results — “I think it is important to hire hiring managers because you know this language to qualify for… some job in their organization.” That interpretation of results applies to all languages in these articles”.

I know some people don’t think SQL is a good language to be considered as syl (yes, I read the comments) but it’s certainly in job requirements. If you want to get coding gig, how should you go about doing that?

There were also a few of the most popular programming languages with very generic names. I added “developer” or “programmer”, to indicate that I was searching for ‘languages and not just words, but some listings are missing — although none of those super-generic names are in the “opportunity zone” (of best skills which hiring managers desperately look for).

About the job listings

What are the terms for such jobs.’ Keep in mind that not all listings are made equal. Some job postings come from companies trying to collect resume data, so if or when an requisition is open they will have people who want to chase after filling it up.

A number of online job postings have already been flooded and are still on the job sites.’ Other jobs may be front for scams, which is particularly frustrating as it has become increasingly difficult to convince people not to follow up with them.

If any company asks you to spend money before you get a full paycheck, keep your mind on you. ZDNET has all the articles about job scams. Take the time to read them.

For this article, we’re simply looking at the overall scope of job listings for specific languages.

If you’re starting to learn programming, what is the best thing that this data means for your career? It should help you understand which languages you should start learning first. If a pro it might mean there will be some demand for those languages already in your database but also may indicate how many languages are required by you.”

Observe this study’s aggregate data (in the main chart I presented at bottom of these articles) and make recommendations for which languages you should know.

When you’re looking for a job and want to know them, they are the languages that you should know.’ If you have one, then put it on your resume and (hopefully) get s jobs with these languages because they’ll be the ones in demand.

Popularity weight based on job site

Not all job sites are the same. LinkedIn has vastly more jobs on offer than either Dice or Indeed:

The Model was initially weighing each of the smaller websites in order to match up with LinkedIn’s values, but this method meant that there were so many more jobs than a weighted aggregate.

That approach gave LinkedIn a big blow by that. But, in fact, it’s the way LinkedIn really does do what is an outsized influence; LinkedIn (for example) ranks SQL as the best language and Indeed near the bottom of Google search results for how the three sites compare to popularity on Facebook or Twitter are related?

The languages to know

Hence, so here’s the key lesson from this study and our previous studies in language popularity is to know Python.

You know, if you’re good at the languages in the “opportunity zone” (i.e. Python, SQL, HTML, Java, C++ and JavaScript), then you’ll be very well placed in your job hunt.

Also: Could AI make data science obsolete?

It is not a huge market, but if you know the “moderate demand” languages of Swift, C#, PHP, TypeScript and Go there are jobs for you as well.

Unless you know them, but don’t spend time learning them — except for the paying gig where they are required as part of your job—and that is why it’s clear to list them on your resume as well as being “declining demand” languages of any shell scripting tool ( Ruby), Kotlin C, R, Rust, Lua or Dart).

Where is the demand for language? What languages do you code in, and what are your favorite paraphrasers? Please comment below.
